If anyone thinks they know what's really causing this kind of behavior-e.g. Somewhat unfortuantely, this is right about the time the server owner had some problems that occupied much of their time, and when their disabling of channels caused a server crash, they weren't able to try very many things to fix it-they got about as far as trying to manually delete all the Controllers, on the assumption that they were causing the crash when combined with the lack of channels. Suspecting that this shennanigans had something to do with channels, I asked the server owner to disable channels in the config. Testing revealed that, yes, connecting back up to the end was very bad juju for the server (secondary bugs included creating fake clones of all the players online).

In an effort to cut down on lag, I started moving our thaumcraft stuff to the End (putting particularly laggy stuff in another dimension usually reduces their impact on the overworld, does it not?), with a subnetwork specifically for essentia (I was going to use a bunch of level emitters pointed at hoppers to control essentia production because I felt like doing it that way). TL:DR: doesn't work with channels, doesn't work without them.
